Apple India Antitrust: $38B Standoff

Apple has escalated its legal battle with India's Competition Commission of India (CCI), accusing the antitrust watchdog of overstepping judicial authority in a new court filing. The ongoing dispute stems from allegations that Apple abused its dominant position on the App Store, which Apple has consistently denied. The tech giant now faces mounting pressure as the CCI seeks to conclude the case.

At the heart of the conflict is India's 2024 competition law allowing penalties based on global turnover rather than just local revenue. Apple warns this could result in a $38 billion levy, which they describe as "manifestly arbitrary, unconstitutional, grossly disproportionate, and unjust." The company has repeatedly challenged this framework, asking Delhi High Court to declare the law itself illegal.

After CCI issued an ultimatum demanding financial information and scheduled a May 21 final hearing, Apple urged the court to intervene. Apple claims the CCI's actions "represent an escalation in its efforts to usurp the Hon'ble Court's authority" and requested the court hear the matter on May 15 instead. Both companies have declined to comment publicly on the escalating dispute.
