Apple's App Store ecosystem generated a staggering $1.4 trillion in developer billings and sales in 2025, according to a new study from economists at Analysis Group. More than 90 percent of that revenue required no commission payment from Apple, highlighting the company's developer-friendly approach in recent years.

The ecosystem has grown nearly threefold since 2019, with consumer-facing AI-powered applications showing exceptional performance. Apps incorporating AI features generated four times more billings than other applications, demonstrating the market's strong appetite for intelligent functionality. "Developers are the heartbeat of the App Store," noted Tim Cook, Apple's CEO.

The "App Store ecosystem" specifically refers to iOS apps downloaded through Apple's marketplace, with some inclusion from alternative app marketplaces or direct downloads that continue to rely on Apple services. This announcement precedes next week's WWDC, where Apple is expected to showcase further developer tools and platform enhancements.
