App Store Hits $1.4T Milestone

Apple's App Store ecosystem reached $1.4 trillion in developer billings during 2025, tripling in size since 2019. The company claims AI apps drove significant growth, with consumer-facing AI applications showing four times the growth of non-AI counterparts among top 100 apps. This milestone highlights the platform's expanding economic impact.

Notably, Apple reports 90% of these billings are commission-free, meaning most revenue occurs outside traditional App Store purchases. The controversial methodology includes subscriptions to services like Spotify and Hulu purchased externally but consumed within Apple's ecosystem. These external digital goods account for approximately $149 billion of the total figure.

Regional growth showed significant variation, with China experiencing more than double sales growth in the past six years while the U.S. and Europe saw triple-digit increases. Physical goods dominated spending globally, though regional preferences differed – food delivery ranked second in Korea while travel held that position in most Western markets. Apple continues investing in developers through global academies and centers, with plans to open a Berlin location in 2026.
