App Store subscriptions drive record revenue

Appfigures' 2025 report reveals a stark split in the app economy. While global downloads fell 2.7% to 106.9 billion, consumer spending surged 21.6% to a record $155.8 billion. This marks the fifth consecutive year of declining installs, proving that finding new users is getting tougher for developers.

The culprit is clear: subscriptions. Developers are shifting focus from chasing downloads to retaining existing users with recurring revenue models. This pivot is especially crucial as the industry still hasn't recovered its pre-pandemic download peak of 135 billion installs, forcing a fundamental change in business strategy.

Mobile games took the hardest hit, with downloads plummeting 8.6%. In contrast, non-game apps saw a slight 1.1% increase. The revenue story is even more dramatic, with non-game app spending jumping 33.9% to $82.6 billion, officially overtaking game spending for the first time.

The trend is even more pronounced in the U.S., where non-game app spending soared 26.8%. For developers, the message is clear: the gold rush for sheer user numbers is over. The future lies in building loyal, paying user bases for their apps through valuable, ongoing services.
