AirPods Pro 2025: IR Cameras and AI Features Coming

Apple is reportedly preparing a new AirPods Pro model for later this year, despite the current version launching just last fall. According to 9to5Mac, this update won't be called AirPods Pro 4 but rather a higher-end variant of AirPods Pro 3 with an added suffix. The unusual back-to-back release cycle appears driven by Apple's push to integrate advanced AI capabilities into its audio products.

Three major upgrades are rumored for the new model. First, built-in IR cameras will enable visual intelligence features similar to those on iPhones, allowing the next-generation Siri to provide contextual information about your surroundings. Second, pressure-sensitive stems may be replaced with hand gesture controls, though some users hope both options remain available. Third, the new AirPods could feature an H3 chip or another silicon modification promising less lag time and better audio quality, building on the H2 chip used in the current model.

Apple typically unveils new AirPods at its September iPhone event, making fall the likely launch window. The AI features will reportedly depend on the new Siri coming with iOS 27, suggesting the release won't happen until after that software update arrives. This strategy positions AirPods as more than just wireless earbuds—they're becoming AI-powered wearable computers.
