Democrats Warn Trump China Policy Risks Security

House Democrats are warning that the Trump administration's decision to pause key technology security measures against China threatens U.S. national security. In a letter to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, lawmakers expressed concern about shelving bans on China Telecom's U.S. operations and restrictions on TP-Link routers and Chinese telecom giants China Unicom and China Mobile.

The Democrats, led by Gregory Meeks and Sydney Kamlager-Dove, argue the administration is prioritizing diplomatic relations over security by reversing measures that would have blocked Chinese electric trucks and buses from U.S. markets. The letter questions whether the Commerce Department conducted proper security assessments before pausing these actions and whether officials were directed to focus on countries other than China.

The controversy comes as President Trump prepares for a high-stakes visit to China from March 31 to April 2, following a trade truce with President Xi Jinping. The Democrats suggest these security rollbacks form part of a troubling pattern of sacrificing American economic and technological interests to stabilize relations with Beijing.
