The National Weather Service has issued winter weather warnings for the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies as a powerful storm system approaches. Heavy snowfall and dangerous winds are expected to create hazardous conditions across the region, with areas along the California-Nevada border facing the brunt of the storm.

A modest atmospheric river event is impacting the Pacific Northwest and will advance inland through Monday into portions of the northern Rockies. The National Weather Service forecasts up to two feet of snow in the high terrain of the Cascades and northern Rockies, while coastal ranges of Washington, Oregon, and northwest California will receive heavy rain.

Cities like Truckee and Lake Tahoe are bracing for severe conditions, with forecasts predicting 10 to 18 inches of snow above 7000 feet and 4 to 6 inches at lake level. Wind gusts could reach 70 mph along the Sierra crest, with wave heights of 1 to 3 feet on Lake Tahoe. The NWS warns that travel could be very difficult and hazardous conditions may impact Tuesday morning and evening commutes.

The storm poses significant risks to transportation and outdoor activities. Small boats, kayaks, and paddle boards are particularly vulnerable to capsizing on lake waters. Authorities advise residents to winterize outdoor faucets, prepare for roof snow removal, and apply salt to driveways and walkways safely. A second storm is expected to hit the area again next weekend, potentially compounding the challenges for affected communities.
