A massive winter storm system is barreling toward the Sierra Nevada, threatening up to 120 inches of snow and hurricane-force winds reaching 80 mph. The extreme weather, forecast to hit starting February 16, will pummel popular ski destinations like Mammoth Lakes and Truckee, California, over a one-to-two-week period.

While major cities are spared direct impact, the storm's path includes several populated ski towns that draw millions of winter tourists annually. Mammoth Lakes alone welcomes 1.3 million visitors during ski season. The heavy snowfall could create ideal conditions for skiers once the storms pass, potentially boosting tourism revenue for the region.

National Weather Service warnings indicate the 80 mph wind gusts qualify as category 1 hurricane-force winds, capable of snapping large tree branches, damaging roofs and siding, and causing widespread power outages lasting several days. The combination of extreme snow accumulation and destructive winds poses significant risks to infrastructure and residents in the Sierra Nevada region.
