Wendy's Closures Signal Fast-Food Trouble

Wendy's plans to close 5%-6% of its U.S. locations, approximately 292 to 350 restaurants, as the burger chain grapples with an 11.3% decline in same-restaurant sales. CFO Suzanne Thuerk attributed the drop to decreased customer traffic despite higher average checks, marking one of the most severe performance declines in recent fast-food history.

The chain is also scaling back its breakfast initiative launched in 2020 during the pandemic. Interim CEO Ken Cook clarified the company isn't exiting breakfast entirely but will provide franchisees more flexibility on operating hours based on local market performance, acknowledging breakfast doesn't work everywhere.

For a mature chain, these moves represent a necessary retrenchment to preserve franchisee economics. Wendy's faces the dual challenge of reversing traffic decline while optimizing its restaurant portfolio, with analysts suggesting the closures reflect broader competitive pressures against McDonald's in the saturated U.S. fast-food market.
