The United States plans to deploy additional high-tech missile systems to the Philippines as part of efforts to deter Chinese aggression in the South China Sea. During annual security talks in Manila, U.S. and Philippine officials outlined plans to increase deployments of cutting-edge missile and unmanned systems to the treaty allies.

Beijing has repeatedly expressed alarm over previous U.S. weapon deployments, including the Typhon missile system installed in northern Luzon in 2024 and an anti-ship launcher deployed last year. Chinese officials claim these weapons aim to contain China's rise and threaten regional stability, while demanding the Philippines remove the missile launchers from its territory.

Philippine officials, led by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., have rejected China's demands. U.S. Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez revealed that defense officials discussed deploying upgraded missile launchers this year that the Philippines may eventually purchase. The Typhon system, which can fire Tomahawk missiles with ranges exceeding 1,000 miles, remains deployed in Luzon alongside the Navy Marine Expeditionary Ship Interdiction System on Batan island. The deployments come as confrontations between Chinese and Philippine coast guard forces have escalated in disputed waters.
