US Missile Pullback From South Korea Raises Philippine Security Fears

The United States has begun withdrawing Patriot missile-defense systems from South Korea to support operations in Iran, raising fresh concerns in the Philippines about Washington's military commitments. The redeployment, which includes parts of a THAAD anti-missile system, has prompted Manila to question whether American assets could similarly be withdrawn from Philippine territory.

South Korean President Lee Jae Myung confirmed that Seoul formally opposed the transfer but failed to prevent it, acknowledging the limits of Seoul's leverage when Washington decides to move its own military assets. The episode has exposed the reality that even treaty allies hosting tens of thousands of US troops cannot guarantee permanent American military presence.

Analysts note a crucial distinction between the two countries' military arrangements. Unlike South Korea's permanent force concentrations and mobile Patriot batteries, the Philippines hosts rotating US troops and prepositioned equipment under the Enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement. This access-based model makes the Philippines less likely to be stripped of critical assets during crises, though it also means American military power in Asia remains concentrated in Japan and South Korea while the Philippines provides a strategic outer arc designed for flexibility.
