US Cattle Industry Faces Historic Drought Crisis

Sixth consecutive drought year threatens to permanently reshape the US cattle industry as ranchers across Oklahoma, Texas, and Kansas face depleted rangelands. The historic dry spell has forced cattle sales as grazing lands wither under persistent drought conditions that show no signs of abating.

Agricultural losses have reached $23.6 billion across three states from 2020 to 2024, with 2022 alone seeing devastating crop failures: 25% of Texas corn, 45% of soybeans, and 74% of cotton lost. Water reserves stand critically low, with Rio Grande reservoirs at just 11%, 34%, and 20% capacity.

The Edwards Aquifer, serving 2.5 million Texans, has reached record lows while research confirms rising temperatures accelerate soil moisture loss. Ranchers and farmers now experiment with drought-resistant seeds and soil conservation practices, though rebuilding cattle herds takes years, leaving the industry vulnerable to prolonged climate stress.
