United Launch Alliance's Vulcan rocket launched from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station Thursday, with observers reporting visible sparks during the ascent. The mission marks another step in ULA's transition from its Atlas V and Delta IV rockets to the next-generation Vulcan system.

The Vulcan rocket represents ULA's $2 billion investment in replacing its aging fleet with a more cost-effective and capable launch vehicle.
