United Launch Alliance's Vulcan rocket launched from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station Thursday, with observers reporting visible sparks during the ascent. The mission marks another step in ULA's transition from its Atlas V and Delta IV rockets to the next-generation Vulcan system.

The Vulcan rocket represents ULA's $2 billion investment in replacing its aging fleet with a more cost-effective and capable launch vehicle. The rocket uses Blue Origin BE-4 engines and is designed to compete with SpaceX's Falcon 9 for national security and commercial satellite launches. Thursday's launch follows the Vulcan's successful maiden flight in January 2024.

ULA, a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin, faces increasing pressure in the commercial launch market. The company's ability to execute regular Vulcan launches will be critical for maintaining its position in the defense and intelligence satellite launch market, where it holds significant contracts with the U.S. Space Force.
