Severe Storms Threaten Plains, Ohio Valley Next Week

AccuWeather meteorologists warn of escalating severe weather and flooding risks across the Plains and Ohio Valley starting Wednesday. Clashing air masses and Gulf moisture will fuel multiple rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms from Texas to Ohio, with some storms potentially severe.

A southward dip in the jet stream over the western United States will draw cooler air while warmth surges eastward, creating conditions for persistent rainfall. The pattern could bring damaging winds up to 70 mph, large hail, and isolated tornadoes, with an AccuWeather Local StormMax™ of 80 mph in the most intense storms.

While initial rainfall may help alleviate drought conditions, the extended storm pattern raises flooding concerns. AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski notes significant rises on secondary rivers are possible. The severe weather threat begins Wednesday with an "some" risk zone from northeastern Texas to eastern Kansas and western Missouri, including major cities like Dallas, Oklahoma City, and Kansas City.

Residents should prepare for multiple days of hazardous conditions and ensure they have reliable warning systems. The combination of severe thunderstorms and prolonged rainfall creates a complex threat that could impact travel, agriculture, and infrastructure across the affected regions.
