A semi truck crash on I-805 in San Diego caused major traffic disruptions after the vehicle burst into flames Tuesday morning. The California Highway Patrol reported the truck hit a crash cushion where the I-8 ramp diverges from southbound I-805, leading to a fire that engulfed the vehicle for nearly an hour.

San Diego County officials confirmed the driver died in the crash and fire. The incident caused diesel and oil to leak into a storm drain, though nearby waterways were not affected. A toxicology report will determine if drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. Only the far left lane reopened about an hour after the incident.

Traffic heading south from North County toward downtown San Diego was diverted to Highway 163. The crash occurred during morning rush hour, completely stopping southbound traffic and causing delays in northbound lanes. News helicopter footage showed the truck's cabin burned down to the metal, with the trailer also destroyed.
