Plug-in Hybrids Abandoned as US Auto Market Polarizes

American automakers are rapidly eliminating plug-in hybrid models from their lineups, reversing a strategy that once positioned them as the essential bridge to full electrification. Stellantis has discontinued five models, including the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, while Ford and Kia have also ended production. Dealer inventory for these vehicles plummeted 46.9% over the past year.

This retreat is driven by collapsing consumer demand and soaring costs. Year-over-year plug-in hybrid sales fell 51.8% in January, even as the average sticker price climbed to $70,565. Industry analysts note the powertrain is prohibitively expensive to produce, requiring redundant hardware for both electric and combustion systems.

The industry is instead polarizing. Automakers are investing heavily in simpler conventional hybrids on one end and range-extended electric vehicles (EREVs) on the other. Ford, Stellantis, and Volkswagen are all betting on EREVs, which use a small gas generator to recharge batteries, offering extended range without plug-in reliance.

Quick Fact: Plug-in hybrid sales fell 51.8% year-over-year in January 2026.
