Norway has achieved a near-total transition to electric vehicles, with over 97% of new car sales in late 2025 and early 2026 being electric, according to IEEE Spectrum. This milestone comes after decades of government commitment, beginning with significant incentives in 1990. State Secretary Cecilie Knibe Kroglund told IEEE Spectrum that tax exemptions were crucial in offsetting early EV disadvantages.

Kroglund emphasized that removing financial barriers through registration and import tax exemptions created a blueprint for other nations. The gradual switch wasn't always easy, but Norway's long-term commitment proved decisive. Companies across the country have embraced EVs, and the charging infrastructure market has become commercially viable without government support. Norway now boasts more than 9,478 public fast chargers nationwide.

This achievement demonstrates how sustained policy can transform transportation. While EV drivers in the United States face challenges with charging access, especially in rural areas, Norway's success shows the potential for widespread adoption when governments commit to long-term incentives. The country's experience offers valuable lessons for nations seeking to reduce transportation emissions and accelerate the transition to cleaner vehicles.
