Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella issued a stark warning that AI will displace workers across industries, with software development as ground zero for disruption. Speaking on the OMR Podcast, Nadella emphasized that ignoring AI's impact risks leaving both companies and individuals behind in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

Nadella compared the coming AI transformation to the personal computer revolution of the early 1980s, when few anticipated how dramatically work would change. He cited estimates from Oaktree Capital's Howard Marks that software alone could see $150 billion to $250 billion in annual labor value shift to AI systems. The Microsoft chief stressed that understanding new tools and acquiring relevant skills offers the best protection against displacement.

Venture capitalist Bill Gurley and Anthropic engineer Boris Cherny echoed Nadella's concerns, warning that workers in any computer-based role face disruption. While Nadella acknowledged that rapid unemployment waves would be 'challenging,' he expressed confidence that democratic processes give society control over AI's implementation. The Microsoft CEO emphasized that people will reject technologies that don't deliver broad benefits, suggesting a path forward that balances innovation with societal needs.
