Asian Stocks Rally on Falling Oil Prices

Asian equity indices advanced across Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and mainland China, tracking overnight gains on Wall Street. Crude oil prices dropped approximately five per cent from recent peaks after Saudi Arabia moved to restore pipeline shipments disrupted by the closure of its East-West pipeline. The decline eased global inflation fears, boosting investor confidence.

Financial markets responded positively to recent Federal Reserve actions aimed at managing rising prices. Traders turned attention to Tokyo ahead of an expected quarter-point interest rate increase by the Bank of Japan. Equity markets in Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Sydney, and Taipei recorded solid gains, while smaller losses were noted in Singapore, Wellington, and Manila.

The drop in crude prices, with West Texas Intermediate dipping below $100 per barrel, helped stabilise sovereign bond markets and pulled the 10-year US Treasury yield below five per cent. On foreign exchange, the Japanese yen weakened slightly against the dollar as investors anticipated the Bank of Japan’s policy decision. Analysts widely expect a quarter-point increase in Japanese borrowing costs, with focus on forward guidance from Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda regarding future monetary tightening.
