Murkowski Rebukes Trump's SAVE Act as Federal Overreach

Sen. Lisa Murkowski became the first Republican to oppose the SAVE Act, a sweeping election bill backed by President Trump that would require proof of citizenship to vote nationwide. The Alaska senator argued that elections should remain under state control, citing the Constitution's delegation of authority to regulate federal elections to the states.

Murkowski's stance marks a significant break from her party, as the legislation has 48 GOP cosponsors and Trump has repeatedly urged Congress to pass it. She noted the irony of Republicans now supporting federal election mandates after unanimously opposing similar Democratic efforts in 2021 and 2022, including the "For The People Act" and "Freedom To Vote Act."

The SAVE Act would bar states from registering voters without citizenship documentation and require ID at polling places. Murkowski warned that implementing new federal requirements so close to Election Day would disrupt state preparations and undermine election integrity rather than protect it.
