Murkowski Breaks Ranks on Trump Election Bill

Sen. Lisa Murkowski became the first Senate Republican to oppose a House GOP election bill requiring proof of citizenship to register and ID to vote. The Alaska Republican argued the Constitution gives states authority over federal elections, warning that imposing new federal requirements weeks before Election Day would threaten election integrity.

Murkowski's stance marks a significant break from Trump administration priorities on election security. She compared the SAVE America Act to past Democratic attempts at federal election reform, noting Republicans previously opposed such measures as federal overreach. The bill, expected to pass the House Wednesday, would also mandate states purge inactive voters from registration rolls.

Senate conservatives led by Sen. Mike Lee are pushing to reinterpret filibuster rules to pass the legislation, but Majority Leader John Thune remains hesitant about tying up the Senate floor. Democrats have denounced the bill as voter suppression targeting minority and low-income communities. Murkowski's opposition could complicate Republican efforts to advance the measure, particularly given her history of breaking with party leadership on key votes.
