SAVE Act Passes House: Voter ID, Citizenship Proof in Debate

The SAVE America Act passed the House Wednesday in a near party-line vote, with all Republicans supporting and all but one Democrat opposing. The legislation would impose strict new voting rules nationwide, requiring documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration and mandating photo ID at polling places. President Trump has long pushed for such reforms.

Current voter registration rules vary by state, but the SAVE Act would standardize requirements across the country. Under the bill, voters would need a valid passport, military ID, tribal ID, or birth certificate—not just a driver's license or Social Security number. The Brennan Center for Justice estimates these requirements would prevent 21 million eligible voters from casting ballots, as only half of Americans have passports.

The legislation now faces an uphill battle in the Senate, where Democrats have vowed to block it. Republicans would need seven Democratic votes to overcome a filibuster, but Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has called it "Jim Crow 2.0." Some GOP senators, including Lisa Murkowski, have also expressed opposition, citing concerns about federal overreach into state election administration.
