Vehicle thefts in the United States fell 23% during the first six months of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, according to the National Insurance Crime Bureau. The decline stems from coordinated efforts by law enforcement, automakers, and insurers. However, certain popular models remain prime targets for thieves due to their parts value and security vulnerabilities.

Hyundai Elantra tops the theft list with over 11,300 incidents, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado at 8,006 thefts and Honda Accord with 8,500 thefts. The Elantra and Sonata were exploited during the 2022 "Kia Challenge" TikTok trend, which revealed these vehicles lacked engine immobilizers. Hyundai and Kia later launched a $200 million settlement and free software updates to address the security flaw.

Modern thieves employ sophisticated techniques like relay attacks, CAN bus injection, and key cloning to bypass security systems. Ford F-150 trucks face relay attacks that amplify key fob signals, while Silverados are vulnerable to digital exploits that disable engine immobilizers. Experts recommend layered protection including Faraday pouches for key fobs, OBD-II port locks, and visible deterrents like steering wheel clubs to discourage theft.
