Mejia Wins NJ House Primary Over Malinowski in Progressive Upset

Former congressman Tom Malinowski conceded to progressive activist Analilia Mejia in New Jersey's Democratic U.S. House special primary. The race drew national attention as Democrats debated strategy for the 2026 midterms in a suburban district that typically favors moderate candidates. Mejia, who campaigned on an aggressive progressive platform, credited her organizing experience for building support across northern New Jersey.

The contest became a proxy battle over Democratic Party direction, with AIPAC's affiliated super PAC spending heavily to defeat Malinowski after he questioned unconditional aid to Israel. Their efforts appeared to backfire as Mejia, who said Israel committed genocide in Gaza, overtook Malinowski with a narrow lead. Centrist groups criticized the outcome, warning it could push the party too far left ahead of the midterms. The district covers parts of Essex, Morris, and Passaic counties, including wealthy New York City suburbs.

Mejia now faces Republican Joe Hathaway in the April 16 special general election to complete Mikie Sherrill's term. The progressive activist, 48, previously served as Bernie Sanders' political director and as deputy director of the Labor Department's Women's Bureau. Republicans are already attacking Mejia as wanting to turn New Jersey into a "socialist hellscape." The race highlights tensions within the Democratic Party as it prepares for the 2026 election cycle.
