Illinois Primary Turns Bitter as AIPAC-Backed Ads Target Progressive Candidates

A Democratic primary in Illinois's Ninth Congressional District has erupted into controversy as AIPAC-aligned groups face accusations of trying to manipulate the race through strategic ad spending. The unusual twist came when a super PAC backing Bushra Amiwala released a positive ad about the Palestinian American candidate, who immediately denounced it as a deceptive tactic.

Chicago Progressive Partnership, which shares vendors with AIPAC-linked groups, has spent at least $1 million attacking Kat Abughazaleh, a progressive influencer who has gained momentum in the race. The group has also spent $100,000 promoting Amiwala, prompting accusations that AIPAC is attempting to split the progressive vote to benefit Mayor Daniel Biss or State Senator Laura Fine.

With the primary approaching, the conflict highlights growing tensions within the Democratic Party over Israel policy. Analysts suggest AIPAC is trying to avoid a repeat of its failed strategy in New Jersey, where a pro-Palestinian candidate won despite heavy spending against them. The crowded field, which includes two Jewish candidates and one Palestinian American, has made Gaza the race's most divisive issue.
