Massachusetts Travel Ban: Blizzard Forces Emergency Measures

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has issued an emergency travel ban affecting Bristol, Plymouth, and Barnstable counties as a severe blizzard creates treacherous conditions across the region. The executive order prohibits non-essential vehicle travel as hurricane-force winds downed trees and power lines, leaving roads impassable and hundreds of thousands without electricity.

The ban, which carries a $500 fine for violators, aims to support snow removal operations and ensure safety for motorists, plow operators, and first responders. The Massachusetts Turnpike speed limit has been reduced to 40 miles per hour, and state officials report 250 disabled vehicles statewide as of 2 p.m. Healey activated an additional 150 National Guard members and declared a state of emergency for most counties.

This marks the first travel ban since 2015, with Healey noting the storm's severity by comparing it to the Blizzard of '78. The governor has requested assistance from neighboring states Vermont, New York, and New Hampshire for snow-clearing equipment. Officials warn that highway service levels will remain reduced for an extended period as crews focus on the hardest-hit areas along the South Coast.
