Maryland's new Savage Highlands State Park is set to open in late August after the state purchased the 42-acre property for $8.7 million in December 2024. The former Savage River Lodge, located in Garrett County, features a woodsy lodge, cabins, and yurts nestled within Savage River State Forest. State officials are completing extensive renovations including roof repairs, bat infestation remediation, and adding primitive campsites.

Former owners Mike and Jan Dreisbach chose to sell to the state rather than a Pennsylvania investment firm to preserve the property's character. The park will offer resort-style facilities at more affordable rates than under private ownership, though the restaurant and bar will remain closed. State officials plan to outfit cabins and yurts with kitchenettes and make several units accessible for people with disabilities.

The state has allocated an additional $800,000 for renovations, representing 10% of the purchase price. While some critics worry about the cost and strain on resources, officials believe the investment will pay off given high demand for overnight accommodations in Western Maryland. The park will initially open in phases, with the main lodge and select accommodations available, and close during winter months due to road conditions.
