Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has announced the closure of additional sections of Cunningham Falls State Park following a second beaver‑related incident on August 5, 2026. The decision comes after a beaver breached safety barriers, causing damage and posing a risk to visitors.

The DNR reported that the animal broke through a fence on the Buena Vista Trail, injuring a hiker and threatening the park’s infrastructure. In response, officials sealed off the damaged area and increased patrols to prevent further encounters.

The incident highlights the growing seasonal activity of beavers in the region. Park staff have urged visitors to remain on designated paths, keep a safe distance from wildlife, and report any unusual animal behavior to DNR staff.

Looking ahead, the DNR plans to conduct a full ecological assessment and install additional deterrents. The goal is to balance wildlife conservation with public safety while keeping the park’s natural beauty intact.
