The extreme rainfall, which also devastated neighboring Mozambique, has claimed dozens of lives, prompting authorities to prioritize emergency response and public safety over tourism.

The closure marks a severe disruption for one of Africa’s largest and most popular safari destinations, a vital source of revenue and conservation funding. Heavy rains are not uncommon in the region during the summer months, but the intensity of this storm system has caused unprecedented damage to infrastructure and access roads.
