The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will replace a 1960s-era water control structure at William O'Brien State Park, a project costing $325,000 and expected to finish in fall 2027. This follows a critical mechanical failure in August 2025 that caused Lake Alice to nearly dry up, leading to a significant water level drop, a fish kill, and an unusable beach.

The DNR states the entire structure must be replaced for a sustainable solution. Public recreation on Lake Alice will remain suspended until the project is complete. Construction begins in spring 2027, with design and permitting starting earlier. DNR Central Region Parks Manager Laurel Quill emphasized the rebuild is the most cost-effective long-term option for maintaining park resources and recreation opportunities.
