Atlanta's Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority is rolling out 56 new CQ400 railcars built by Swiss manufacturer Stadler, marking a significant upgrade from trains dating back to the late 1970s. The redesigned cars feature wider aisles, phone chargers, enhanced legroom, and expanded space for bikes, strollers, and wheelchairs. Connie Krisak, MARTA's Senior Director of Vehicle Procurement, emphasized the open layout's ability to accommodate more standing passengers.

This $700 million investment comes at a crucial time as Atlanta prepares to host eight FIFA World Cup matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in June and July. The new railcars aim to improve efficiency during major events, addressing current congestion that can delay station clearing by 45 minutes after games and concerts. The stadium, home to the Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United FC, regularly draws large crowds for sporting events and performances by artists like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé.

The upgrade prioritizes both comfort and security. Each train will carry a dedicated officer, and all cars will be equipped with cameras and audio sensors that instantly alert authorities during emergencies. Jonathan Hunt, MARTA's CEO, compared the system to a Ring camera, explaining how it enables immediate response to incidents. The new cars will be phased in over three years, with multiple train sets operational by summer 2026.
