NFL Venues Rework Fields for 2026 World Cup

Eleven NFL stadiums are being refitted for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, swapping artificial turf for natural grass to meet FIFA’s 105‑by‑68‑meter requirement. The conversion demands extensive groundwork, from ripping out synthetic surfaces to installing ryegrass‑Kentucky bluegrass mixes and advanced irrigation. Players like Messi and Mbappé will step onto fields that look nothing like a typical gridiron.

Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium removed its turf in January, laying a ryegrass‑bluegrass blend tested during U.S. men’s friendlies. Similar work occurred at Gillette, AT&T, NRG, Arrowhead and SoFi, each adding sand, ceramic layers and climate controls. AT&T Stadium raised its pitch four feet, using 15,000 tons of material, while Arrowhead cut 3,500 seats to fit the wider layout. Costs varied, with Dallas‑area upgrades approaching $300 million and Houston’s project tallying $15 million.

The upgrades also required covering non‑World Cup branding, a task complicated by Atlanta’s roof logo exception. Despite the labor, the stadiums now meet FIFA standards, allowing the United States, Canada and Mexico to host a truly global tournament on venues traditionally built for American football.
