Louisville drivers face years of major construction as Kentucky Transportation Cabinet officials juggle four simultaneous highway projects totaling over $280 million. The largest undertaking, a $130 million overhaul of the Interstate 264-Brownsboro Road interchange, began in July 2025 and will continue through Fall 2027. This project includes widening I-264 and reconstructing the Brownsboro Road bridge near the new 972,000-square-foot VA medical center.

Additional work includes the $150 million I-65 Central Corridor Project, scheduled for completion by mid-2027, and the replacement of expansion joints on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Bridge, now expected to finish by Fall 2026. The I-71 widening project in Louisville's urban core will also continue through Fall 2027, with lane closures limited to off-peak hours. The most disruptive work comes in Summer 2026, when I-65 will close completely between downtown and I-264 for approximately two months.

These infrastructure improvements aim to accommodate increased traffic from the new VA facility and improve regional connectivity. While the timeline extends through 2027, officials emphasize that careful scheduling and phased construction will minimize long-term disruption to commuters.
