Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST) acquired 2,284 acres of Sargent Ranch for $23 million, halting plans for a controversial sand and gravel quarry in the Bay Area. This purchase, part of a broader conservation effort, prevents the development of a 403-acre mining operation.

The land, historically significant and environmentally sensitive, had been a target for various commercial developments, including hotels and golf courses. POST's acquisition secures a crucial piece of open space in the region, protecting biodiversity and wildlife corridors.

The trust now owns 6,114 acres of the 6,500-acre ranch, with plans to buy the remaining land later this year.
