K-Shaped Recovery Fears: Caste System Risk in US Economy

Economist Peter Atwater, who coined the term 'K-shaped recovery,' warns that America's economic divide could evolve into a rigid caste system. He expressed concern that the widening gap between high and low earners might create permanent barriers to upward mobility, particularly in job and educational opportunities.

Atwater points to troubling indicators already emerging in the US economy. Homeownership has become increasingly unattainable, with the average household needing $116,986 annually to afford a typical home—well above the 2024 median income of $83,730. Meanwhile, stock ownership remains concentrated among the wealthy, with the top 10% holding approximately $28 trillion in stocks and mutual funds, representing half of all household wealth in these assets.

The consumer confidence gap between income groups has reached alarming levels, with Americans earning under $15,000 reporting a confidence reading of 55.4 in January, near a five-year low. In contrast, those making over $125,000 reported confidence at 94.9. Atwater warns that this growing disparity could lead to a situation where 'additional effort isn't going to change the outcome, so why play the game?'
