Japan Eases U.S. Car Import Rules for Trade Balance

Japan is preparing to allow U.S.-built vehicles on its roads as part of efforts to address trade imbalances. Toyota has confirmed plans to export the Camry, outgoing Highlander, and Tundra to Japan, while Honda and Nissan are evaluating similar moves. The initiative follows a recent tariff agreement between the two nations.

To comply with new regulations, American-made cars must display a two-inch star-shaped decal resembling the U.S. flag, indicating safety compliance with American standards. This requirement applies to both new imports and existing models like the Jeep Wrangler and Cadillac Escalade already sold in Japan. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced the rule change.

The relaxed approval process eliminates the need for region-specific modifications, potentially reducing costs for manufacturers. While Japan typically requires amber indicators and side marker reflectors, American vehicles can now be imported without these changes. However, the ministry encourages voluntary adjustments to bumper height and emissions standards, which remain stricter in Japan. Headlight alignment will need adjustment for right-hand traffic.
