A former IT manager from Kent, Washington, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for stealing nearly $1 million from his employer through a sophisticated fraud scheme. Paul Welch, 44, used his position of trust to funnel company funds into personal accounts over several years, funding a lavish lifestyle that included first-class travel, luxury hotels, and even a Porsche for his wife.

Welch's scheme began in 2017 with unauthorized Amazon purchases totaling at least $43,000 for personal electronics. He escalated his theft in 2019 by using company credit cards for personal purchases at retailers like Apple and Best Buy, adding another $60,000 in fraudulent charges. The most damaging phase started in January 2021 when Welch created fake vendor accounts mimicking legitimate computer services companies, transferring approximately $879,175 directly to his personal accounts.

When confronted by company employees in January 2024, Welch provided false documentation and misleading information to cover his tracks. The company ultimately lost about $982,520 due to transaction fees on Welch's activities. FBI investigators traced the fraudulent transactions, leading to Welch's conviction for wire fraud and restitution order to repay the stolen funds.
