On Jan. 19, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) arrested 47‑year‑old Courtney Janell Shaw, an assistant principal at Free Home Elementary, on charges of shoplifting. Walmart in Woodstock alleges she stole 98 items worth $943.97 between Nov. 2 and Dec. 31, 2025 in a span of two months.

A Walmart employee reported that Shaw stacked items, scanned only one, and left the store with the rest. Surveillance captured her exiting in a gray Jeep and a gray pickup, but license plates remained unverified. Investigators later located matching 2018 Ford F‑150 and 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee at her home.

Following the arrest, Free Home Elementary placed Shaw on administrative leave pending internal and law‑enforcement reviews. The Cherokee County School District emphasized its commitment to student safety, noting that inappropriate conduct will never be tolerated. Shaw, who has taught across the Southeast for over two decades, faces a $4,875 bond.

The case underscores the vulnerability of retail security and the reputational risk for schools when staff violate trust. Walmart has requested criminal charges and a ban from its stores, while the district reviews hiring protocols. Investors watch how such incidents affect community confidence and potential insurance costs.
