A groundbreaking study may finally confirm that one in 200 people worldwide carries DNA from Genghis Khan, the legendary Mongol conqueror. Researchers from Japan, Kazakhstan, and the U.S. have identified a Y-chromosomal lineage in medieval mausoleums in Kazakhstan's Ulitau region that matches the genetic signature previously attributed to Khan's descendants.

Local tradition long held that one mausoleum contained the remains of Jochi, Khan's eldest son, though this connection remained unproven. The tombs belonged to the Golden Horde, the Mongol Empire's western division ruled by Jochi's descendants. All three men buried there shared haplogroup C3, the same genetic marker found in 0.5% of the global population in a 2003 study.

This discovery could resolve centuries of debate about Jochi's parentage and Khan's true lineage. Born after Khan's wife Börte was kidnapped by the Merkit tribe, Jochi's legitimacy was questioned by his brother Chagatai, creating succession tensions that ultimately excluded both from inheriting the empire. If confirmed, the findings would not only validate the widely cited statistic about Khan's descendants but also settle a historical controversy that has persisted for nearly 800 years.
