Former Oak Ridge High School band teacher, Paul Varoff, appeared in El Dorado County Superior Court Wednesday, facing ten felony counts. The charges relate to alleged sexual acts with a minor, including an incident at his school office. Varoff, who taught at the high school for over three decades, was arrested on Monday.

Varoff did not enter a plea, opting to seek private representation and waiving his right to a speedy arraignment. The criminal complaint details five counts of oral copulation and five counts of sexual penetration of a person under 18. The alleged incidents occurred between January and August 2023 at multiple locations.

The prosecution cites aggravating factors like the victim's vulnerability and Varoff's abuse of trust. He remains in the El Dorado County Jail without bail. Authorities are urging anyone with information or potential additional victims to come forward. A new arraignment hearing is set for February 12th.

This case highlights the importance of safeguarding children and the severe consequences of abusing positions of authority. The investigation remains active, underscoring the potential for further developments. Schools across the country are grappling with how to keep students safe, especially around trusted adults.
