Chipotle CEO Defends Pricing Strategy Amid Wealth Debate

Chipotle CEO Scott Boatwright is pushing back against claims that the burrito chain caters exclusively to wealthy customers. In a statement to Yahoo Finance, Boatwright emphasized that 60% of Chipotle's customers have household incomes over $100,000, yet the company remains committed to serving all demographics. The admission follows a pricing controversy that sparked online debate about the brand's accessibility.

The fast-casual giant has faced mounting pressure as its stock price tumbled roughly 31% over the past year. While shares rebounded slightly in early February, investors are bracing for a 2026 outlook predicting flat comparable sales growth. Chipotle's pricing strategy comes as annual restaurant inflation hovers around 4.1%, with beef prices reaching record highs of $6.69 per pound in December 2025.

To address concerns about affordability, Chipotle is testing a "Happier Hour" promotion featuring $10 or less meal bundles. The move marks a significant shift for a company that has traditionally positioned itself as a premium fast-casual option. Boatwright insists the chain is underpricing inflation by raising prices only 1% to 2% this year, despite margin pressures from rising food costs. The strategy represents Chipotle's attempt to balance its premium aspirations with its core identity as an accessible dining option for everyday consumers.
