Chipotle Opens First Mexico Restaurant in Monterrey Suburb

Chipotle Mexican Grill will open its first Mexican outpost Thursday in San Pedro Garza García, a wealthy suburb of Monterrey, Nuevo León, operating the site with partner Alsea, which also runs Domino’s Pizza, Starbucks and Burger King across Latin America. CEO Scott Boatwright told the FT that Mexican consumers are "very excited" and that the chain will serve the same US menu, highlighting fresh ingredients and a price point "you can’t get anywhere else." The company plans additional locations in Nuevo León later this year and a launch in Mexico City in 2027.

The expansion comes as Chipotle’s domestic traffic fell for four straight quarters in 2025‑26, with shares dropping 33 per cent over the past year. The chain blames weak US consumer sentiment driven by high inflation and petrol prices, while still posting revenue gains from new stores and menu price hikes. Chipotle also targets openings in South Korea this year and Singapore next year.

Historically, US brands have had mixed success re‑entering their cuisine’s home market. Starbucks now operates more than 30 stores in Italy after a skeptical Milan debut, whereas Taco Bell withdrew twice from Mexico after its Tex‑Mex menu failed to resonate. Chipotle hopes its fast‑casual model will differentiate it in a market saturated with traditional Mexican food.
