Buc-ee's Idaho Expansion Hits Traffic Snag: Flyover Plan Rejected

Buc-ee's ambitious plans to bring its Texas-sized convenience stores to Idaho have hit a major roadblock. The beloved travel-stop chain was exploring building a 74,000-square-foot travel center at the Meridian Road interchange off I-84, which would have been its first location in the state and marked a significant westward expansion beyond Colorado. The proposal included an ambitious flyover structure that transportation officials deemed unfeasible.

The Idaho Transportation Department met with Buc-ee's representatives in January and concluded the development as presented wouldn't work. The primary concern centered on managing the 19,000 daily vehicle trips the center would generate through an already congested interchange. Buc-ee's engineers had proposed a grade-separated ramp allowing drivers to bypass Meridian Road entirely, but ITD officials said this would require extensive additional study and environmental review.

Beyond traffic concerns, the proposal raised questions about funding and long-term maintenance. ITD spokesperson Jill Youmans noted that even if funding materialized for the flyover, questions remained about who would own and maintain the infrastructure. The city of Meridian, which would need to approve any development, hasn't received recent communication from Buc-ee's representatives and is currently in a holding pattern while the company conducts due diligence.

While ITD doesn't have authority to block developments based solely on traffic impacts, the department's determination that the proposal is "not feasible" creates a significant hurdle. The outcome suggests Buc-ee's may need to reconsider its approach or find alternative locations if it wants to expand into Idaho's growing market.

Quick Fact: Buc-ee's opened its first store in Texas in 1982 and has expanded to over 50 stores in nearly a dozen states.
