The ammunition, featuring a proximity fuse, was fired at multiple small drone types to evaluate its effectiveness as a counter-UAS tool.

This test accelerates a critical shift in military doctrine. With drone swarms now a pervasive battlefield threat, the service is rapidly adapting existing platforms like the Apache instead of relying solely on expensive missiles. The airburst-capable round offers a clear advantage, detonating near a target without requiring a direct hit to disable drones.

The development responds to a pressing need for affordable, replenishable counter-drone weapons. While branches explore lasers and other systems, the Army prioritizes urgent fielding of this ammunition.
