A tragic murder-suicide at Baptist Health Brookwood Hospital in Alabama has left a newborn orphaned and sparked urgent questions about hospital security. Precious Elicia J'anae Johnson, 24, was recovering from childbirth when her husband, 19-year-old Kynath William Terry Jr., fatally shot her before taking his own life.

Police say the couple had recently welcomed their first child. The shooting occurred on Sunday, March 1, while Terry was visiting Johnson at the Women's Medical Center. Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the violence, which unfolded in a space meant to be safe for patients and families.

The incident has prompted local officials to reassess hospital security protocols. While Alabama hospitals are not required to employ security guards, most facilities maintain safety measures including metal detectors and screening procedures. The Alabama Hospital Association plans to review statewide safety plans, with President Danne Howard emphasizing that hospitals conduct emergency preparedness exercises every two years.
