Father placed desperate 911 calls fearing for daughter's safety hours before her and mother's bodies were found in a Rio hotel room. Police initially cleared the scene after finding no immediate danger. Addilyn Smith, 12, and Tawnia McGeehan, 34, died from apparent gunshot wounds. The father, who had temporary custody, reported McGeehan had sole custody at the time. Police confirmed McGeehan shot her daughter before turning the gun on herself.

Coach placed a second 911 call reporting the girl could be in imminent danger, noting McGeehan's car was parked at the hotel. The stepmother also urged authorities to investigate. Police later determined McGeehan had a history of domestic abuse against the child, leading to her losing custody in 2020. The father had been granted temporary custody.

The father's initial call described McGeehan as "very strange" after failing to respond to messages. He had spoken to her the day before and found nothing amiss. Police stated they had no indication of danger when they cleared the scene around 10:43 a.m. The bodies were discovered hours later at 2:27 p.m. after security entered the room.
