An 11-year-old boy made his first court appearance Thursday in connection with the shooting death of his father, Douglas Dietz, in Pennsylvania. Clayton Dietz appeared before a judge after allegedly shooting his adoptive father on his 11th birthday when his Nintendo Switch was taken away as punishment.

The preteen waived his right to a preliminary hearing and is currently being tried as an adult after being denied bail on January 13. Court documents reveal Clayton became angry when his father took away the video game console and told him to go to bed. The boy later found a key to his father's safe, discovered a gun, and allegedly fired at his dad.

Clayton's attorney, Dave Wilson, stated his goal is to move the case to juvenile court. The boy reportedly told police he was mad but hadn't thought about the consequences when he pulled the trigger. Douglas Dietz's wife, Jillian, told investigators they had sung happy birthday to their son before going to bed, and she woke to the sound of the gunshot. A next court date has not been scheduled, but Wilson anticipates proceedings in May.
