Whey Protein Shortage Hits Food Makers as Prices Surge to $13 a Pound

Food manufacturers are stuffing whey protein into an expanding array of products, from chips to candy bars, creating a supply crunch that's driving prices to historic highs. The industry workhorse ingredient now commands more than $13 a pound, nearly triple its value from a year ago.

Companies are chasing protein-obsessed consumers, including those using GLP-1 weight-loss drugs, who seek high-protein foods to maintain muscle mass during rapid weight loss. This trend has pushed whey protein concentrate 80% into short supply across snack and packaged food categories.

Manufacturers are loading up on the additive to differentiate products in a crowded marketplace, but the surge in demand has outpaced supply. Whey protein concentrate, traditionally used in sports drinks and infant formula, now appears in cereal, ice cream and even popcorn as brands chase nutritional trends.

The shortage signals potential margin pressure for food companies already facing elevated commodity costs. Brands may need to reformulate products or pass costs to consumers already sensitive to grocery inflation.
