TJX's Self-Inflicted Issues Hit Sales

Second‑quarter sales for TJX Cos. climbed to $15.18 billion from $14.4 billion, yet the retailer’s U.S. apparel division still fell short of expectations, underscoring a shopper pullback even as the discount chain projects a stronger full‑year outlook.

Same‑store sales at Marmaxx—the combined Marshalls and T.J. Maxx banners—rose 1 %, a slowdown from the 3 % gain a year earlier, reflecting inflation‑weary consumers cutting back and becoming more selective about where they spend.

Chief Executive Ernie Herrman said the division missed forecasts, blaming operational missteps that hurt apparel sales. He added the problems were self‑inflicted and within the company’s control, noting progress in correcting store mix and inventory timing.

Shares slipped 3.1 % to $146.22, a 5.2 % year‑to‑date decline, as investors weigh the impact of the comments and the broader retail environment on future performance.
