Stanley Black & Decker Shuts New Britain Plant Over Tape Measure Shift

Stanley Black & Decker has announced that its long‑standing New Britain plant will shut its tape‑measure line on May 18, ending a mile‑long manufacturing run that once produced millions of screwdrivers, drills and other tools. The decision follows a shift in demand toward double‑sided tape measures, a feature the company no longer supplies locally for customers worldwide and the plant.

With the closure, 300 employees will lose their jobs, and production will cease entirely. Workers described the single‑sided measures as high quality, but customers now prefer the double‑sided design that offers easier readability from either side of the blade. The move reflects broader industry trends toward higher functionality and overseas manufacturing in the global tool market today and will reshape.

Stanley Black & Decker’s exit from New Britain signals a shift in the American tool industry, where legacy brands must adapt to evolving consumer preferences and cost pressures. The plant’s closure underscores the challenge of maintaining domestic production of niche products when competitors offer more versatile designs at lower cost. The company will now focus resources on high‑margin tool lines abroad.
